What copy trading is: the honest pros and cons

Copy trading⏱ 8 min readUpdated 31 Oct 2026
In this lesson you'll learn
  • How copy trading works technically
  • What it does well, and what it can't do
  • Who it suits

How it works

Copy trading links a master (the account or signal source being copied) to one or more followers. When the master opens, changes or closes a trade, the copier repeats it on each follower, sized by each follower's own rule (fixed lot, ratio, equity-proportional or risk %).

What it does well

  • Saves time: no need to watch screens all day.
  • Removes entry decisions, and the hesitation that comes with them.
  • Lets traders run several accounts (including prop accounts) from one.
  • Gives access to experienced traders' strategies.

What it can't do

  • It can't make a bad strategy good: you copy losses as faithfully as wins.
  • Results differ slightly between accounts: different brokers, spreads, fill prices and timing.
  • It doesn't remove your responsibility to choose and size well.
  • Past results don't guarantee future ones.

Who it suits

People who want market exposure without day-to-day trading, traders managing several accounts, and learners who want to watch a professional's trades in real time. It suits people least who expect guaranteed income.

Common mistakes
  • Assuming copying removes risk.
  • Expecting identical results to the master on a different broker.
  • Choosing a provider on returns alone.

How this works when you copy trades

Goldman Copier copies between MT4, MT5, cTrader and TradeLocker accounts, and from TradingView alerts, with per-follower sizing and risk limits.

Key takeaways
  • A copier repeats the master's trades, sized by each follower's rule.
  • It saves time but copies losses as well as wins.
  • Choose and size carefully; results won't be identical.
