What it is

Trade in the direction of an established trend, using two moving averages to define it. The idea: trends persist more often than they reverse, and you catch the middle of the move.

The rules

SetupThe 50-period EMA is above the 200-period EMA (uptrend), or below it (downtrend). Trade only in that direction.EntryWait for price to pull back to the 50 EMA, then enter when a candle closes back in the trend direction.StopBeyond the pullback's swing low (for buys) or swing high (for sells).Target2R, or trail the stop under each new swing.

When it fails

In ranges. When price chops sideways, the averages cross back and forth and give a string of small losses ("whipsaw").

Risk profile

Win rate often only 35–45%; profits come from a few long trends. Expect losing streaks of 6–8.

Who it suits

Patient traders who can check charts a few times a day and sit through losses.

Automate it
