Becoming a strategy provider: track record, transparency and profit share

Expert⏱ 10 min readUpdated 31 Oct 2026
In this lesson you'll learn
  • What followers need to see before trusting you
  • The responsibilities of trading for others
  • How profit share and fees typically work

Your trades become other people's money

When others copy you, every decision affects their accounts too. Good providers think like fund managers: consistent risk, transparency, and no gambling to recover a bad month.

What followers need

  • A verified track record of at least 6–12 months on a real or tracked account.
  • Return and maximum drawdown, shown together.
  • A clear description of the style: markets, holding time, typical risk, stop loss on every trade.
  • Honest communication in drawdowns.

Rules to set for yourself

  1. Fixed risk per trade; never increase size to recover losses.
  2. No grid or martingale: followers can't see the hidden risk until it's too late.
  3. A maximum drawdown at which you stop and review.
  4. Trade the same way whether you have 1 follower or 1,000.

How providers earn

Common models are a profit share (e.g. 20–30% of profits made for followers) or a fixed subscription. Profit share aligns your income with followers' results, but can tempt providers to take big risks for big months. Followers should look for providers whose risk stays steady.

Legal note

Managing or advising on other people's trading can be regulated in some countries. Platforms set terms for providers; read them, and check local rules where you live.

Common mistakes
  • Changing style after gaining followers.
  • Increasing risk to chase a monthly target.
  • Hiding drawdowns or deleting losing periods.

How this works when you copy trades

Goldman Copier's Follow a trader program reviews provider applications and shows followers results worked out from the provider's real account history, including drawdown.

1. What should a track record always show next to return?
2. Why avoid martingale as a provider?
3. A profit share can tempt providers to…

Key takeaways
  • Followers need verified results, drawdown and a clear style.
  • Fixed risk, no martingale, and the same behaviour at any size.
  • Know the platform's terms and your local rules.
