Copying into prop accounts safely

Copy trading⏱ 9 min readUpdated 31 Oct 2026
In this lesson you'll learn
  • What prop firms usually allow, and forbid, about copying
  • How to size copies inside prop limits
  • A pre-flight checklist

Read the rules first

Prop firms differ widely on copy trading. Common positions:

  • Allowed: copying between accounts you own, from your own trading.
  • Often forbidden: copying other people's trades or third-party signals; trading identical positions to other customers; hedging across accounts.
  • Sometimes restricted: EAs or copiers, high-frequency strategies, news trading.

Breaking these rules can mean losing the account and any profits. When in doubt, ask the firm in writing.

Sizing inside the limits

static max loss (−10% of start) trailing max loss equity profit target +10%

Size copies so that a normal losing streak stays well inside the daily and maximum loss limits (lesson "Prop-firm trading at a professional level"). On a challenge, 0.5–1% per trade is common.

Pre-flight checklist

  1. The firm's copy rules allow this setup.
  2. Daily loss % and equity stop on the follower set inside the firm's limits.
  3. Maximum lot size set.
  4. Symbols mapped to the firm's names.
  5. News rule: does the firm restrict trading around news?
  6. A test trade opened, modified and closed correctly.
Common mistakes
  • Assuming all firms allow copying.
  • Setting the copier's daily limit equal to the firm's (no margin for slippage).
  • Copying a third-party signal service into a firm that forbids it.

How this works when you copy trades

On Goldman Copier, set Daily loss % and Equity stop a little inside the firm's limits, so copying pauses before the firm's rule is reached.

Key takeaways
  • Check each firm's copy rules, and ask in writing if unsure.
  • Set copier limits inside the firm's limits.
  • Run the pre-flight checklist before real trades.
